I'm Natalie Marby and I offer couples cunselling in English or German language at my office in Bielefeld. I'm half British, half German and therefore speak both languages fluently. Especially international couples with a German and/or English speaking partner can benefit from my sessions by being able to speak in their preferred language during the sessions.
How does couples therapy work?
Most of my couples clients need three 90-minute appointments in order to stabilize their relationship and communication style and to regain trust in themselves and their partner. The procedure of my couples therapy typically consists of three steps:
1st appointment:
Problem analysis and goal definition
During the first appointment, I will give each partner the opportunity to present their point of view, express their needs and to offer a possible explanation for the conflict. In this first appointment, each partner's individual goal for the couples therapy is also defined. I use systemic therapy techniques to explain the relationship dynamic, the communication patterns and individual triggers. Each partner is given homework to prepare for the follow-up appointment. In some cases the couple is also given a joint homework assignment.
2nd appointment:
Relearning communication
The second session is about relearning how to communicate with each other. For this, I use methods from cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy and communication psychology. The aim is to remain objective, constructive and respectful and to give each other space and thus enable a genuine exchange and long-term conflict resolution. The second appointment also ends with each partner receiving homework or the couple may receive a joint homework assignment.
3rd appointment:
Proposed solutions and agreement
The third appointment typically presents possible solutions to the relationship problem and we look at which solution works best for you. Ideally, you will agree on one or more solution approaches and commit to working together on this. You will define intermediate goals and set up a relationship agreement to ensure that you stay on track. In some cases, couples book further appointments, e.g. at monthly intervals, in order to assess their progress and, if necessary, re-adjust goals or procedures. My experience has shown that these three appointments form a solid basis for couples to continue to work independently on their relationship issues.
